Incubate || Sanitation || Harvest || Feeding || Storage || BBS Sieves

Welcome to our step by step guide to hatching Baby Brine Shrimp. This page will cover the task of Baby Brine Shrimp Hatchery Sanitation.

Sanitation begins when the hatching container is first prepared to incubate BBS cyst and continues until the batch is exhausted. Sanitation allows the possibility of extending the amount of  time a BBS hatchery may remain in service before starting again. This allows an opportunity to fully exhaust the hatchery with each use.

Start to incubated each batch with a clean hatching container and fresh ingredients. Clean and rinse the hatching container with hot  water and wipe dry before each use.

After cyst have have hatched remove empty cyst from hatching containers before harvesting BBS. Empty cyst will float to the top.

A turkey baster may be used to remove empty cyst from hatching containers. Empty cyst have been found not to be a significant hazard to Angelfish fry. However removing the cyst allows for easier harvesting BBS from the top and prevents the task of removing empty cyst from tanks later.

After removing the empty cyst from the hatchery deposit them in a BBS Sieve . Strain the empty cyst through the filter.

An advantage in using paper coffee filters as in a BBS Sieve is that it provides a easy means to strain and dispose of empty cyst. Strained hatching media maybe returned to the hatching container to restore media volume, aid harvesting or simply discarded.

After collecting empty cyst simply discard them in the trash. When harvesting BBS about 25 percent of the hatching media is discard.  Rinse water can be used to maintain required volume.

Replace any discarded hatching media with rinse water. Continue to run hatchery until the BBS hatch out is fully exhausted. Clean and rinse the hatching container with hot  water and wipe dry before each use.

We have created a gallery of images of Brine Shrimp hatcheries from pictures that have been submitted or collected by us from all over the internet. You will see many examples of BBS hatcheries including popular versions sold in local pet stores in actual use.  Click on the links below to see our introduction to Baby Brine Shrimp, view the AMH Gallery of BBS Hatcheries or continue on to the next section of the AMH BBS Hatching Guide.
